When there's a pause during Netflix viewing on the TV, after some time, it activates what seems like a screensaver with suggestions of productions available on this platform. Usually, something catches my eye on this screensaver enough for me to decide to watch that movie or TV show. That's how I found out that in a few days, a new series titled One Day will be available on Netflix. I decided to give it a chance, and... I definitely wasn't disappointed.
The main characters - Emma and Dexter - first talk to each other on July 15, 1988 - the day of their high school graduation. They spend time together, getting to know each other. They share their visions of the future, who they would like to be, etc. We return to the fate of the characters on July 15 when they are older - each of them dealing with everyday life, extraordinary moments, and sometimes disappointment.
I definitely can't describe TV shows... With each one, I'd like to tell every episode with literally EVERY detail, but then there would be spoilers, which I personally don't like! ;)
But back to One Day - I somewhat knew how the plot and the relationship of the main characters would unfold. The series is based on David Nicholls' book of the same title. There was even a 2011 adaptation with Anne Hathaway in the role of Emma. I watched that movie, but it was so long ago that it's impossible to remember everything in detail. There were, of course, comparisons as to whether One Day is more successful as a movie or a series, whether Ambika Mod performed better as Emma, or perhaps Anne Hathaway did much better. Which Dexter is more handsome and seductive - Leo Woodall or the film's Jim Sturgess?
I was personally enchanted by the series from 2024. And I especially liked the colors - vibrant, sunny, cheerful. This series is a bit of a throwback to the 90s, where there were no smartphones, only simple mobile phones. There are also no social media, all those modernities of the 21st century. I am personally a huge fan of contemporary productions that are recorded in such a retro style. I admire the stylizations, scenography, etc.
Each episode of One Day is short, dynamic, and engaging, there's no room for boredom. During the viewing, we get to know the main characters and observe how they evolve over the years. Will Dexter and Emma become a couple, or will they remain just friends? It's a romantic comedy, so you can be sure there will be many romantic twists and turns - typical of this genre! But whether their life paths will cross or they will go in completely different directions, you can find out by watching the series - everything will become clear there!
